Healing Through Creativity and Support

Healing Through Creativity and Support

5 Lessons from Brandy Maslowski: Healing Through Creativity and Support

In a recent episode of Beneath the Helmet, I had the privilege of sitting down with Brandy Maslowski, a former firefighter lieutenant turned quilter and mental health advocate. Brandy’s transformation journey after leaving the fire service is a powerful testament to resilience, creativity, and the importance of a strong support system. Here are five key takeaways from our conversation.

1. Creativity as a Path to Healing

Brandy discovered quilting during her time in the fire service and found it a vital outlet for her creativity. It became more than just a hobby—it became a lifeline. Quilting helped her process trauma and find wellness through artistic expression. In Brandy’s words, "Creativity is a huge part of our mental health and well-being." For anyone feeling stuck, finding a creative outlet can be a powerful tool in your healing journey.

2. The Courage to Leave for the Sake of Health

After 15 years in the fire service, Brandy decided to leave. Struggling with Operational Stress Injury (OSI) and physical illness, she realized the toxic work environment and trauma were taking a severe toll on her. Leaving her career was difficult, especially with firefighting running in her family, but it was necessary for her survival. This bold move allowed her to reclaim her health and start a new chapter.

3. The Power of a Strong Support System

Throughout her healing process, Brandy’s family, particularly her husband, played a critical role in supporting her. Having open, honest conversations about her triggers and needs allowed her to feel safe and understood. Whether adjusting routines on hikes or helping her manage stress at home, Brandy’s family was integral to her recovery. This highlights the importance of building a support network when facing trauma.

4. Navigating Triggers with PTSD

Brandy shared how complex PTSD manifests in her daily life. From unexpected triggers like the smell of baby powder to anxiety during hikes, her triggers are rooted in past trauma. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques have helped her manage these moments, allowing her to be more present and in control. Her journey reminds us that healing is ongoing, but navigating life’s triggers with the right tools is possible.

5. Self-Care is Not Optional

One of the biggest lessons Brandy learned through her trauma and healing journey is the importance of self-care. When she was in the depths of her struggle, self-care became almost non-existent—simple things like brushing her teeth or eating were forgotten. It wasn’t until she began intentionally structuring her days with routines for self-care that she started to feel better. Now, Brandy swears by her morning and evening routines, which include basic wellness practices like hydration, exercise, and rest. Self-care is the foundation for recovery and mental wellness.

Brandy’s story inspires us to prioritize our mental health, especially in high-stress professions like firefighting. Whether you’re dealing with trauma, burnout, or simply looking for a way to reconnect with yourself, consider finding a creative outlet or building stronger support systems around you. For those needing more profound guidance, practices like TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises) or coaching can be transformative.
