Why Mental Health Is a Daily Journey: Reflections from Beneath the Helmet

Why Mental Health Is a Daily Journey: Reflections from Beneath the Helmet

On this special episode of Beneath the Helmet, in honor of World Mental Health Day, I had the opportunity to speak straight from the heart—no guests, just me and a microphone. Mental health is a journey we all navigate, sometimes in smooth waters and sometimes in turbulent waves. It deeply affects every one of us, whether we're first responders, family members of one, or simply someone juggling the demands of life.

The Importance of Self-Leadership in Mental Health

One of the key takeaways I shared today is that burnout isn't just about doing too much—it's about doing too little of what makes you feel most alive. I’ve been learning that along the way in my own mental health journey. Too often, we find ourselves wrapped up in responsibilities, meetings, and to-do lists, leaving little space for what fuels our joy and passion.

I used to believe that working long hours, constantly grinding, and always being available caused my burnout. While those can certainly contribute, the real heart of the issue was neglecting my own self-leadership—neglecting the activities that brought me to life.

Honouring Your Efforts

On this World Mental Health Day, I want to honour each of you for making it through another day. Your efforts matter. Sometimes it feels like you're climbing a hill every day, and that’s okay. What’s important is that you're still climbing.

In honour of this day, I'm offering a free 90-minute TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) session. TRE is a tool that has personally helped me recover from burnout, and I use it regularly to maintain my wellness. All you have to do to enter is share this episode on social media and tag me, mentioning one nugget that resonated with you.

Why This Podcast Exists

Mental health is still a topic we need to talk about more. That's why I started Beneath the Helmet. It's about sharing experiences around self-leadership, mental health, and physical challenges. It’s a place for stories that inspire hope and action, where every conversation comes with practical takeaways you can implement in your own life.

As a first responder, getting lost in the work is easy—always giving, always serving. But being elite in your field isn't about being better than others; it's about showing up as your best self—mentally, physically, and spiritually. That’s what self-leadership is all about.

Your Mental Health Journey

I challenge you to do two things today:

  1. Do something for yourself—going for a walk, trying TRE, or connecting with someone who brings you joy.
  2. Reach out to someone you love—it could be a call, a text, or a coffee meeting. Small acts of connection can make a huge impact.

Remember, mental health isn't a destination; it's a journey. Sometimes, we move quickly; sometimes, we must slow down and realign our compass. The direction matters more than the speed.

Thank you for being a part of this community. Let’s continue to lift each other up and continue the conversation about mental health.
